Common Q&A's about Craniosacral therapy with Nathalie

FAQ

01

What is Craniosacral therapy?

Craniosacral therapy, also called cranial osteopathy, is a gentle, holistic type of body work, in which clients are met with great awareness, humility and presence. Craniosacral work supports the body in activating and supporting self regulation and the body's inherent self healing ability. It combines scientifically, and anatomically founded body work and finely tuned work with internal processes. With the goal to support the whole human into greater balance.

This holistic form of therapy supports the body in releasing restrictions, blockages and imbalances and thus improves the function of the whole body. As a therapist, I use light touch to work with the whole body: muscles, fascia, bones and nervous system. When a person is at their best, all organs, membranes, ligaments, tissues and fluids move freely. I help the body find its way back to free movement and free-flowing fluidity so that you can feel your very best. I use many different techniques, depending on what you need today with the goal of helping you get into better balance.

02

How does Craniosacral therapy
work?

It is based in close work with the craniosacral system, which comprises the skull, spinal cord, the meninges, spinal cord membranes and the Cerebro-Spinal Fluid. This fluid, bathing the brain and spinal cord, moves, protects and provides our nervous system with nourishment, keeps it flexible and in dynamic movement, as well as makes sure that our brain has optimal conditions (yep, it’s rather important). This system, and its functions have a direct influence on our well-being, health, and energy levels since the central nervous system has a big importance for all functions in the body.

When a person feels their best, all organs, membranes, ligaments, tissues and fluids in the body move freely without restrictions, tension or blockages. If these movements/rhythms/flows are hindered in their free expression, e.g. as a result of stress, trauma, illness or injury, various problems and diseases can arise. Through gentle contact with the body, as a practitioner I help the body to rediscover its free movements and free-flowing rhythms. By gently coming into contact with the craniosacral system, disturbances and blockages can be recognised and the system can be brought back into better balance. Thus the inherent health is supported in its self-regulation so that positive changes can take place. I work with light touch on the whole body: muscles, fascia, skeletal and nervous system to guide the body back to balance and the best possible well-being. Many people are surprised that such a gentle form of body work can be so effective.

04

How many sessions will I need to get better?

This is highly individual and depends on what your goals are with the process.

I recommend 4-6 sessions at individually determined intervals to start. Perhaps this is enough for you to sustainably create the change you are looking for, maybe you’d like to keep coming. In the 5th session we’ll do a status-check and discuss where you are at and how to proceed.

Many of my clients experience desired changes within 3-5 sessions. Some are done after this, others continue to come but with more spaced out appointments for upkeep or prevention.

05

How often should I come?

In the beginning it I advise you to come every 7-10 days, for your first 3-6 sessions. After this we’ll see what benefits you the most. Many of my clients space out their sessions as we go along, and end up coming only for ‘touch ups’ when they feel the need.

06

Can you cure "X"?

I cannot cure anything. I can support your body's system in finding better balance and well-being which can alleviate many symptoms, provide relief, help your body rejuvenate and regenerate and help you and your body regulate.

07

What happens during a session?

1. We start all sessions by talking about your needs, goals and what is in focus today. Based on that, we work with what you want to change, to support your well-being in the best possible way.

2. Subsequently we head to the massage table, where you lie in comfortable clothing. We may also work sitting, standing or in motion. I will come into contact with your body using a gentle, often perceived as calming touch. Through this touch we’ll come into contact with the body's different systems and support the body in finding and activating inherent resources.

08

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothing, so that you can relax and breathe freely. You remain fully clothed during the entire session

09

Are there any side effects with craniosacral treatments?

You may feel relaxed or a little tired afterwards, but there are no direct side effects to expect after a craniosacral treatment. In addition to relaxation, many people experience good sleep after a treatment.

10

How should I expect to be feeling during a treatment?

This is individual, but many experience calm and relaxation. Some experience a slight “tingling” in the body during treatment. Some fall asleep.

11

Can I combine Craniosacral therapy with other types of treatment and therapies?

Abroad, e.g in Switzerland, the UK, US and Germany craniosacral therapy is used, often recommended by doctors, from birth. In Switzerland, many pediatric centres and birth wards have craniosacral therapists on the team, or work closely together with one. The school where I trained offers special craniosacral courses four doulas and midwives, as it is widely recognised how effective this incredibly gentle form of treatment is for newborns as well as mum.
